In just a few hours, seasoned knitter Vicki Cummings will teach you the basics of knitting. In the first session, you'll pick a project (e.g., scarf, snood, or dishcloth) and learn how to cast on, knit, and purl. In the second session, Vicki will assess your progress and teach you how to troubleshoot problems and finish your work.

When the workshop is over, you can practice your skills at Purple Crayon's weekly Stitch and Bitch event, which is FREE to all Purple Crayon members!

Now that the holiday crazies are over, it’s time to give YOURSELF a gift!

Gather 16 of your favorite old t-shirts—from your favorite concerts, events, vacations, and school days (or, in a pinch, the local thrift store!)—and create a beautiful memory quilt!

In this workshop, Purple Crayon's founder and avid quilter, Pam Robbins, will teach you the basic quilting skills you need to make an easy, but lovely (and snuggly!) blanket for your living room, basement, child's dorm room—or wherever you want to stave off the winter chills.

(In future, more advanced, t-shirt quilt workshops, Pam will show you how to apply fusible featherweight, incorporate decorative borders, combine t-shirts to make more elaborate squares, embellish your quilt with accent stitching, etc.)

This workshop is designed for beginning quilters, but seasoned quilters are welcome—and often have just as much fun!

Thinking of writing or illustrating a book for kids? Whether it’s for the children in your family, or for publication, award-winning writer Linda Lowery will walk you through the basics of what makes a terrific picture book. Since the writing always comes first (yep, even for Maurice Sendak!), in this workshop, you'll focus on how to:

  • Discover fresh story ideas

  • Find your natural, authentic voice

  • Play around with rhythm and rhyme

  • Work within industry-standard format, page count, word count

  • Give the illustrator creative freedom (even if you yourself are the artist)

  • Allow the art to compliment and contrast with text

  • Create a 32-page draft dummy (storyboard)
