MEMBERSHIP PRIVILEGES

HOW MUCH DOES A PURPLE CRAYON MEMBERSHIP COST, AND WHAT DOES IT INCLUDE?

You can join Purple Crayon for as little as $40/month! You can find details about what each type of membership costs, and what it includes, on our memberships page. If you still have questions, please contact us.

WHEN IS PURPLE CRAYON OPEN?

Members have access to Purple Crayon 24/7.

CAN I BRING A GUEST (OR MY CHILD) TO PURPLE CRAYON?

We love when members bring their friends and family members to Purple Crayon to try it out! We do, however, limit complimentary visits to one time per guest out of respect for our other, paying members. If members would like to bring the same guest to PC more than one time, they may purchase a daily ($10/day) or monthly ($30/month) guest pass. Women must be at least 18 or older to join.

CAN I BRING MY PET TO PURPLE CRAYON?

No, we do not permit members to bring their pets on-site. Purple Crayon is responsible for assuring the health, safety, and comfort of all of its members, and, unfortunately, not everyone can tolerate animals.

CAN I STORE MY STUFF AT PURPLE CRAYON?

If you purchase a membership that includes a dedicated creation station (i.e., Orchid Membership and above), you will have access to one (or two, if you rent the whole station) 30"x13"x32" built-in, secure storage unit. Creation stations also include a 12"x30"x13" open storage unit(s).

All Lavender members have access to one, 11"x11" storage bin free of charge. Additional storage bins may be available for an additional fee.

All members also have access to communal shelving for oversize materials and temporary, communal shelving for work(s) in progress. Purple Crayon provides three different types of shelving to accommodate different types of art. Shelving built to store flat projects (paintings, drawings, etc.) includes different sections for drying and storing pieces temporarily. We ask that you be considerate of others and only store your projects on-site while you are working on them.

CAN I LISTEN TO MUSIC WHILE I'M AT PURPLE CRAYON?

You are welcome to listen to music through earphones set at a reasonable volume.

CAN I PAUSE MY MEMBERSHIP WHILE I’M ON VACATION OR TRAVELING?

No. While membership is month-to-monthand we're happy to put an account on hold if a member is going to be gone for several months, we don’t typically pause and restart memberships on a regular basis.

The intent of having a month-to-month membership policy is so that women can try out the studio without feeling obligated to join for six months or a year, as is typical with similar membership-based businesses. It also accommodates members who split their time between two homes (e.g., they spend half the year in Asheville and half the year in another city). We don’t want them to have to pay for several months of wasted membership.

WORKSHOPS AND EVENTS

DO I NEED TO BE A MEMBER TO TAKE A WORKSHOP AT PURPLE CRAYON?

No. Most of our workshops are open to the public. As a Purple Crayon member, however, you will receive a 10% discount.

DO I NEED TO BE A MEMBER TO COME TO ONE OF YOUR EVENTS?

Yes, unless it’s a public event. One of the perks of membership is the ability to attend Purple Crayon's fun, community-building events, like our weekly and monthly creativity circles and occasional field trips.

WHAT KINDS OF WORKSHOPS DO YOU OFFER?

We offer workshops that develop both artistic skill and self-awareness—and we particularly love workshops that combine the two!

I REGISTERED FOR A WORKSHOP, BUT I CAN’T GO NOW. WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS?

Please see our cancellation policy.

TEACHING

I WANT TO TEACH AT PURPLE CRAYON. WHO DO I CONTACT?

We are always looking for new instructors! Please complete a Workshop Proposal (Word) (PDF) and email or snail mail it to us if you're interested.

HOW MUCH DO YOU PAY YOUR INSTRUCTORS?

We pay our instructors a split rate of 50%/50% of the total income from your workshop, with a minimum rate of $50/hour for actual instruction. You will be reimbursed 100% for your materials.

WHAT MARKETING SUPPORT DO YOU PROVIDE YOUR INSTRUCTORS?

To help our instructors fill their workshops, we provide the following marketing support:

  • Listing on our website

  • Listing in our monthly newsletter

  • Posting on our Facebook page

  • Posting to various local online calendars

We also distribute mid-month workshop reminders via email and occasionally post flyers at the libraries, YMCAs, and other local venues that potential participants frequent.

WHAT REGISTRATION SUPPORT DO YOU PROVIDE YOUR INSTRUCTORS?

We handle all registration and payment collection via our website. We also follow-up with participants multiple times after registration to minimize no-shows—and, of course, to make sure participants feel supported!

WHAT IS THE MINIMUM NUMBER OF STUDENTS YOU REQUIRE TO HOLD A WORKSHOP?

We negotiate this with our instructors, but it's typically four to six.

DO I HAVE TO BE A MEMBER TO TEACH AT PURPLE CRAYON?

No. We want to offer the widest selection of workshops possible, so we encourage any woman with skills, passion, and interest to apply!

HOW IS YOUR CLASSROOM SET-UP?

Workshops are taught in our flex creation station area, which is in the back of our space. The area has six, 72"x30" tables and seating for up to 12 students. Workshop attendees also have access to our relaxing lounge area, large break room (which includes a mini-fridge, microwave, and coffee maker), utility sink, and bathroom—as well as ample parking.

Please note that the area is not enclosed, so privacy is not ensured. While members are not permitted to use the tables while workshops are in session (unless, of course, they are participating in the workshop), other members may be using nearby creation stations or the adjacent lounge. Since members are encouraged to be respectful of others (including wearing headsets when listening to music), noise is rarely an issue.

If you would like to check-out the space to see if it would be appropriate for your workshop, please contact us

GETTING STARTED

IF I WANT TO TOUR PURPLE CRAYON BEFORE APPLYING FOR MEMBERSHIP, CAN I STOP IN OR SHOULD I MAKE AN APPOINTMENT?

The studio is closed to the public, but we are always happy to give you a private tour. Please contact us to make arrangements. We’d love to show you around!

DOES MY MEMBERSHIP HAVE TO START ON THE FIRST OF THE MONTH?

No, your membership starts whenever your application is approved and you complete the registration process.

WHY MIGHT SOMEONE GET TURNED DOWN FOR MEMBERSHIP?

The main reasons someone might get turned down for membership are 1) we can’t accommodate her artistic medium (e.g., she's a potter or metalsmith), we can't accommodate her work style (e.g., she works best in a private studio), 3) we can’t accommodate her choice of membership (e.g., she wants a dedicated creation station, and they’re all taken), or 4) we can't accommodate additional members.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I GET TURNED DOWN FOR MEMBERSHIP?

If you get turned down because we can’t accommodate your choice of membership, you can either purchase a Lavender Membership, or you can be placed on a waiting list. Either way, we will notify you if/when your desired membership levels becomes available.

WHY DO YOU REQUIRE A $100 REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT TO INITIATE SOME MEMBERSHIPS?

We require a deposit to initiate any membership with a dedicated creation station (i.e., Orchid Membership and above) in case someone damages her creation station and fails to pay for repairs. Our creation stations are custom-made and worth much more than $100, but the money helps offset the loss.

OTHER STUFF

WHAT EXACTLY IS PURPLE CRAYON?

Purple Crayon is a creative space for women to connect. It provides affordable studio options and a variety of arts and crafts workshops and events. For more information, see our mission.

IS THERE PARKING AT PURPLE CRAYON?

Yes. Purple Crayon is located in Reynolds Village, a beautiful neighborhood of local businesses featuring shopping, dining and other services.

DOES PURPLE CRAYON OFFER GIFT CARDS?

Yes. Please see our gift card page to purchase one.

I AM A CURRENT PURPLE CRAYON MEMBER AND LOVE MY SPACE! DO YOU GIVE REFERRAL REWARDS?

At this time, we’re not set up to give referral rewards—other than a huge “Thank you!”—but we’ll definitely consider it in the future!

I LOVE THE LOOK AND FEEL OF PURPLE CRAYON! WHO'S RESPONSIBLE FOR IT?

Besides her wonderful husband, John, two amazing women helped Pam Robbins, the founder, pull the space together. Jessica Marie Auge, a Broker at Carla and Company, helped Pam navigate Asheville's crazy commercial real estate market and find the perfect location. And Susan Kinney-Gill, of Suezen Designs, helped Pam bring her decorating vision to life. Pam also owes a huge debt of gratitude to two of her original Steering Committee members, Sarah Robinson Bryan and Michelle Breen, who provided countless hours of advice and support to the overall project. Purple Crayon wouldn't be what it is without all these lovely ladies!
