Block Printing (3.5 Hrs)

Block prints look handmade, and it’s the imperfection that draws us in. Because neither the process nor the prints need to be perfect, even mistakes can be lovely!

Join printmaker, Margaret Dahm, as she shows you how to get started on this fun and foolproof craft. First, you’ll use found objects, fruit, and other household items to practice rolling ink, mixing colors, and regulating printing pressure. Next, you’ll design and carve small pattern blocks and play with printing on paper, cardstock, and, eventually, kraft postcards. Then, you’ll puzzle out a design and, finally, carve and make a basic reduction print.

No drawing skills required. All you need is a desire to try something new—and have a great time!

Decoupage Picture Frame (2.5 Hrs)

A photograph is a great way to capture a memory—but displaying it in a frame that also captures the moment makes it even more special!

Decoupage, the art of cutting out and adhering paper images to a surface, has had a big resurgence recently, and it's easy to see why. It’s fun and economical (it’s a great way to make ordinary objects extraordinary, or give new life to old, worn out objects), and almost anyone can produce a beautiful piece of art with minimal effort.

In this workshop, Purple Crayon owner, Pam Robbins, will show you how to create a decoupage picture frame that captures something meaningful for you. Your frame can highlight Asheville—and, for tourists, would make a wonderful, handmade souvenir—or pretty much anything you can think of: another city, a person, a feeling, etc. If you can picture it, you can “paint” it with just a little glue and paper!

Fluid Art (2.5 Hrs)

Have you ever wanted to create an abstract painting but weren’t sure how to start? If so, fluid art—also called [acrylic] pour painting, flow art, liquid art., etc.—might be just what you’re looking for!

Fluid art is a form of abstract art that uses acrylic paints with a runny (fluid) consistency. The paints react with each other when combined to make interesting and visually organic motifs. As the paints run amok and spill across your canvas, the possibilities are endless!

In this workshop, Deana Murchison will show you several different ways to do acrylic pours. Then, you’ll make two, 8” x 10” abstract paintings using the dirty pour/flip pour method. Finally, Deana will demonstrate how to finish your painting with an acrylic coating.

This is a fun and easy class and is great for experimenting with color!

Note: To preserve the integrity of your design, your paintings must dry flat for at least 24 hours before moving. You will need to return to the studio to pick up your pieces and finish your paintings with acrylic coating at home.

Mixed Media: Wall Art (3 Hrs)

To the untrained eye, a twig is just a castoff piece of wood. But, to a mixed media artist, a twig can be bundled with other twigs…and bark…and moss to create a beautiful, three-dimensional picture. Same holds true for man-made objects, like bottle caps, spools, old doll pieces, etc.

Mixed media artist, Susan Goodman, has been finding and repurposing “things,” as she calls them, since she was a child. In this workshop, she’ll show you the basic steps of creating mixed media pieces of art. You’ll start by laying down a gesso foundation; then, you’ll assemble your creation; finally, you'll paint your glued items and finish your project.

This workshop can either focus on repurposing objects found in nature or man-made artifacts. You pick! Materials will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their own “things” to include in their projects.
