Girls' Night (or Day) Out

Looking for something a little different for your next Girls' Night (or Day) Out? Consider scheduling a private arts and crafts party at Purple Crayon! We've got lots of great workshops to choose from, and, if you don't see what you're looking for, we'll be happy to try to find an instructor!

Notes:

  • We can't serve alcohol at Purple Crayon, but YOU are welcome to bring whatever food and beverages you'd like!

  • All students must show proof of Covid vaccination or medical contraindications to receiving a Covid vaccine to attend a workshop. Any student with documented medical contraindications to receiving a Covid vaccine will be required to wear a mask.

Here's how it works:

  1. You and four or more of your friends come up with a date and time for your next Girls' Night (or Day) Out.

  2. You and your friends decide what workshop(s) you'd like to take.

  3. You contact Pam at pam@purplecrayonavl.com or 828-771-6148 and let her know what workshop you'd like to take and when. (We suggest you have a backup workshop and date just in case your first choice isn't available.)

  4. Pam contacts the workshop instructor to see if she's available on one of your requested dates/times.

  5. Assuming we can find a date/time that works, we hold the slot for seven days.

  6. When we receive your payment, we finalize the event and start preparing for your special day!

Knit Blanket
Chunky Blanket (4 Hrs)

You’ve probably seen these super soft, super snuggly blankets in your favorite home goods store for $75-$100 or more. Now you can make your own for a lot less, once you learn the technique. No knitting experience necessary!

Non-knitter Pam Robbins will step you through the process. First, she’ll show you how to cast on to start your project. Then, you’ll learn how to knit your blanket until it’s approximately 45”x 60”. Finally, Pam will show you how to bind off your piece to give it a professional look. And you’ll do all of this using just your hands; no needles required!

To make sure you’ll love the color(s) of your blanket, everyone in your party will need to purchase 5 skeins of super bulky (6) or jumbo (7) chenille yarn, such as  Bernat Blanket Big yarn, Yarn Bee Eternal Bliss yarn, or Lion Brand AR Workshop Chunky yarn.

Decoupage Picture Frame (2.5 Hrs)

A photograph is a great way to capture a memory—but displaying it in a frame that also captures the moment makes it even more special!

Decoupage, the art of cutting out and adhering paper images to a surface, has had a big resurgence recently, and it's easy to see why. It’s fun and economical (it’s a great way to make ordinary objects extraordinary, or give new life to old, worn out objects), and almost anyone can produce a beautiful piece of art with minimal effort.

In this workshop, Purple Crayon owner, Pam Robbins, will show you how to create a decoupage picture frame that captures something meaningful for you. Your frame can highlight Asheville—and, for tourists, would make a wonderful, handmade souvenir—or pretty much anything you can think of: another city, a person, a feeling, etc. If you can picture it, you can “paint” it with just a little glue and paper!

You’ll start by making a simple, perfectly symmetrical dot using a special tool. Then, Deana will show you how to expand your mandala by adding dots of all different sizes and colors. You’ll also learn how to layer dots to produce a 3D effect. You’ll leave with two completed stones or coasters and all the skills needed to continue dotting on your own.

Fluid Art-square.jpg
Fluid Art (3.0 Hrs)

Have you ever wanted to create an abstract painting but weren’t sure how to start? If so, fluid art—also called [acrylic] pour painting, flow art, liquid art., etc.—might be just what you’re looking for!

Fluid art is a form of abstract art that uses acrylic paints with a runny (fluid) consistency. The paints react with each other when combined to make interesting and visually organic motifs. As the paints run amok and spill across your canvas, the possibilities are endless!

In this workshop, Deana Murchison or Dawn Barnard will show you several different ways to do acrylic pours. Then, you’ll make two, 8” x 10” abstract paintings using the dirty pour/flip pour method. Finally, Deana will demonstrate how to finish your painting with an acrylic coating.

This is a fun and easy class and is great for experimenting with color!

Note: To preserve the integrity of your design, your paintings must dry flat for at least 72 hours before moving. You will need to return to the studio to pick up your pieces and finish your paintings with acrylic coating at home.
