No matter what you call it—a “junk journal,” “personal journal,” “DIY journal”—or what you use it for—to collect and store daily memories, mementos, photos, collages, inspiring quotes, or anything you want to remember—January is the perfect month to create and start keeping a handmade journal. In this highly imaginative workshop, paper artist Kristen Grady will show you how to make a handmade journal to fit your needs.
You’ll start by cutting and sizing an empty cereal box to create the cover for your journal. After strengthening and decorating your cover, you’ll learn how to turn your precious papers and actual “junk” mail into various types of pages (decorative, envelope, writing, etc.) until you fill your book. Next, Kristen will show you how to stitch your pages into the cover and then go over ways to fill in your journal as you go. You’ll be surprised at how full your book can become in just an afternoon! Finally, you’ll add decor, embellishments, and ephemera to finish your project.
You’ll leave the workshop with a personalized keepsake that will help you start your year off right!

Big, Bold, Beautiful Embroidered Knits

Date: Saturday, 2/7 (Inclement Weather Date: Saturday, 2/21)
Time: 10:00 AM-5:00 PM (includes an hour break for lunch)
Workshop Fee: $108 (Members); $120 (Non-Members)

Instructor: Jeannie Thomma
Skill Level: Beginner
Supplies Provided by Instructor: Embroidery hoop, yarn, knit fabric, embroidery needles, stencils, transfer paper, marking pens and pencils
Supplies Students Should Bring: Embroidery scissors and a thimble if you’d like to use one. If you want to embroider a knit sweater or accessory (e.g., scarf, mittens, hat, bag), you’ll also need to bring the item to the workshop. Wool or acrylic knits work best, but cotton or linen knits will also work as long as they’re not lacy or very loosely knit. If you have a favorite yarn that you’d like to use to embroider with, you may bring that as well.
Embroidery is all the rage these days, and, after taking this fun, fiber-focused workshop, you’ll understand why. Not only is it an enjoyable hobby, it’s a great, economical way to zhuzh up ordinary or worn-out clothes and accessories—or decorate your home!
Embroidering knits isn’t difficult, but it requires a slightly different approach than embroidering woven fabric. In this highly-meditative class, fiber artist Jeannie Thomma will introduce you to special tools and techniques that make this type of embroidering easy!
In just a few hours, Jeannie will teach you some basic embroidery stitches that you can use to embellish a favorite knit sweater or accessory, or create a "patch" or "pocket" that you can stitch to your choice of garments or frame as a keepsake.
You’ll start by sketching your own design or choosing from a collection of pre-made templates. Then, using a palette of yarn that sings to you and some beautiful embellishing stitches, you’ll settle in, enjoying the centering craft of embroidery. Before you know it, the hours will melt away, and you’ll have added some playful pop to your wardrobe or wall.

Cold Wax for Beginners: Leveraging Color

Date: Friday, 2/27 & Saturday, 2/28
Time: 1:00-5:00 PM both days
Workshop Fee: $144 (Members), $160 (Non-Members)
Supplies Fee: $40 (To be collected day of workshop; cash or check only)
Instructor: Denby Dale
Skill Level: Beginner
Supplies Provided by Instructor: Art papers, 8”x10” cradled panel, cold wax medium, oil paints, various-width masking tapes, mark-making tools, stencils, applicators
Supplies Students Should Bring: An apron or clothes that can be stained. All other supplies will be provided; however, students are encouraged to bring rigid “tools,” such as old credit cards, favorite plastic stencils, etc., if they have them.
Do you love the depth and luminosity of encaustic painting but don’t want to deal with the setup hot wax requires? If so, cold wax—which is related to, but also very different from, encaustic—may be your answer! In this exploratory, two-day workshop, mixed media artist Denby Dale will teach you how to build a layered, color-driven cold wax composition that emphasizes the opacity and transparency of this versatile medium, as well as how purposeful layering of colors affects and influences your work.
Day One will be all about hands-on learning! First, Denby will show you how to make colored wax by adding small amounts of oil paint to clear cold wax medium. Then, you’ll play with creating levels of opacity and transparency by applying clear and colored wax to different surfaces. Finally, you’ll experiment with using additive and subtractive techniques to add line, pattern, and mark making to your pieces.
On Day Two, after your initial wax layers have had time to dry, you’ll leverage your learnings from Day One and continue to build and refine your compositions. You’ll create your own piece using special masking tapes, stencils, and other tools to add hard lines and color shifts to your work, creating several dynamic abstract pieces.
You’ll leave the class with an assortment of small cold wax painting studies on various art papers and a finished 8”x10” cold wax painting on a 3/4" cradled panel.
If you've never worked with cold wax, this class will introduce you to one of the many ways the medium can be used. If you’ve had some experience with cold wax, this workshop is a great way to add to your knowledge base and explore new techniques.
No drawing or painting experience necessary!
